CCMI’s First Foray into Monitoring the Market for Cashmere and Superfine Wool Products within China Yields Success

Below is an English translation of a notice that was sent out from the Chinese Animal By-Products Marketing Association (CAMA). This notice (No. 21), is to a cashmere corporation [Company name withheld].

By way of background, CCMI had purchased some garments in Beijing and had them tested for both cashmere content and superfine wool labelling. In the case of one of the garments it was substantially mislabelled as to cashmere content. We informed Madam Zuoxian Zhao, President of the Chinese Animal By-Products Marketing Association, of our findings, asking her to take action and to advise us as to what action was taken. I was pleased to see that Madam Zhao acted immediately and forcefully.

Madam Zhao has now suggested that the executives of the corporation meet with Karl Spilhaus, President, Cashmere and Camel Hair Manufacturers Institute during his March travel to Japan, Korea and China on CCMI business, including the annual meeting of the Chinese Animal By-Products Marketing Association.

This is CCMI’s first foray into monitoring the market for cashmere and superfine wool products within China; I hope that you will agree that the outcome is favorable.

The notice, which may to read in the original Chinese below, says:

This urgent notice is about stop selling "100% cashmere round neck cardigan."

We, CAMA, received a message from the international cashmere association (CCMI) who found your company was selling 100% cashmere round neck cardigans with tags indicating premium grade and the ingredient of 100% cashmere. After testing, the real result is 35.8% cashmere and 64.2% wool, which is significantly different from the writing on tag. It is misleading. We recommend your company take the following measures:

  • Change the tag of 100% cashmere round neck cardigans and stop using the words 100% cashmere;

  • Investigate all cashmere products and correct all mistakes; and

  • Establish and perfect internal quality tests and tag control.

    Meanwhile, we wish your company would pay attention to the treatment of this problem. If it is not handled properly, the governmental departments will investigate and take care of it. Please report to us your effective measures.
